The United Nations Minamata Convention, signed in more than 147 countries around the world, came into effect in August 2017. The treaty bans the production and import and export of various products containing "mercury" from 2020 onwards. (Including fluorescent tubes for lighting and power-saving bulbs will be banned from December 31, 2018).
