French health authorities warn that LED lights can damage the eyes

May 14, 2019, 5:22 PM

Maisons-Alfort (France) (AFP) - The French government-run health monitoring agency said this week that "blue light" in LED lighting can damage the retina of the eye and disrupt the natural pace of sleep. New findings confirm that earlier concerns "exposure to strong and powerful LED light is 'phototoxic' and may result in irreversible loss of retinal cells and reduce visual acuity," French Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Agency Security (ANSES) warns in the statement.

In a 400-page report, the agency recommended that the maximum exposure to acute exposure be modified, even in the home or work environment.
